Hellos for Overgreeters - Simple Steps to Calmer Greetings

04/08/2024

😱 Every dog owner's worst nightmare. ⁣⁣⁣

You're greeting your friends at the door when all of a sudden... ⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣😱"Ouch!" ⁣⁣⁣

⁣⁣⁣You realize that your exuberant pup has jumped up and scratched your guest. 😱⁣⁣⁣

⁣All kinds of thoughts run through your head. ⁣⁣⁣🤯

"Are they okay?"⁣⁣

"What happened?"⁣⁣⁣

"What did they do with my dog?"⁣⁣

"Will they want to leave?"⁣⁣

"Will they want to come back?"⁣⁣

"Gosh, I hope the scratch isn't bad enough to require a doctor's visit..."⁣😭⁣⁣

⁣⁣😟 You're worried they'll never want to come back over. ⁣⁣⁣

😔 You're concerned about what they'll say to your other friends. ⁣⁣⁣

⁣😫 It's gut-wrenching. You're worried. You're embarrassed. ⁣⁣⁣

Here are some quick tips for those over greeters:

Put your dog away

Before you answer the door, place your dog in a safe space away from the door, such as a crate, pen, hallway, or room with a baby gate.

Use a leash

Use a leash to keep your dog’s distance from the visitors. This works best if you have a helper to answer the door. If you are by yourself, you can unlock the door (for friends and family), say, “Just a minute,” and move your leashed dog away from the door. Then say, “Come on in!”

Implement Scatters

Say, "Go say hi," and the helper engages. Interrupt the visit after 2 seconds. Say "Scatter." Drop treats in the scatter corner. Repeat the process until you see your dog relax. You can learn more about his process here.

Create Distance

Encourage spatial distance from the greeter. Say "Find" and toss a treat behind you to create distance. Repeat many times as you converse with the greeter.

Away and Open

Encourage your guests to move their bodies away from your dog and open their arms low and to the side (dog height). Once your dog enters that space, wait for 2 seconds before turning away and repeating the process. Repeat the process until you see your dog relax.
